Like many Americans, Vickie Jo wanted a lovely home at a great price. She decided to build an addition on a small house, instead of buying a big one. She thought it was a good financial decision. She could have not been more wrong!
Vickie Jo Trethewey was a real estate property manager who knew exactly how to build her dream home... renovate a small, older house. She finally found the perfect one, and today she lives in her dream home.
But it’s not been easy getting to this point.
During construction, her contractor walked off the job over a dispute that was eventually settled out of court. Vickie hired sub-contractors to finish but realized it would cost $50,000 more than she originally estimated. So Vickie pulled out the plastic.
"The only choice I had was to start using credit cards. I was sick inside because I was smart enough to know that credit cards are not the way to live your life," she now says. "But when it comes to finishing a house that you have to get a certificate of occupancy for, I just did not have a lot of other means or choices."
It wasn’t long before the creditors started calling.
"My phone for a while, rang every single day at least 10 times, and it was a bill collector for a credit card company."
Vickie had always given 10 percent of her money away. And now, in spite of the minimum credit card balances she couldn’t afford,
she continued to tithe.
"Stopping my tithe was not an option -- not at all. I know Pat [Robertson] has taught a lot about finances, and I’ve learned a lot from him. And one thing he always says is, 'You can’t afford not to tithe.' ”
Vickie says God honored that decision with a new job selling houses, sights unseen off of blueprints for a new neighborhood.
"We were selling dirt, that’s what we call it in the business. And that’s hard. When you go in, and you don’t have any other models to show anybody, and you are just selling lots. You have pieces of paper explaining to people what our homes are going to look like. It’s difficult to sell, but I began selling immediately," she says.
Vickie found herself making six times more than her previous job and in six months paid off the entire $50,000. She is now enjoying her beautiful home without the credit card debt.
"If you are going to give then you are going to open up doors, and God is going to keep His promise and bless you."
