– Virak, an 11-year-old Cambodian boy, is “the man”
around the house. He loves to help his mom and care for his sisters, even
though he is the youngest in the family. Virak is also excited about something
else -- going to school!
“At school, I study the Cambodian language, math, social studies,
geography, and science,” Virak tells CBN. “When I grow up,
I want to be a teacher.”
Tragically, Virak lost his father to an illness several years ago.
His mother sells vegetables from home to support the family.
“My business isn't too good,” says Virak’s mother.
“At first, I got $2.50 a day, but it's getting worse. Whenever
I get some money, I use it to run my business. But I hardly make a profit.
I'm just barely able to feed my family.”
Virak adds, “ When I saw my mother sacrifice for me, I felt sorry
for her. That made me want to study even harder.”
What Virak didn't know was that he was on the verge of being removed
from school because of their financial situation. However, that wasn't
the worst news. His mother also had another painful decision to make.
”I was thinking I should send my son to his grandmother's so
she could take care of him. but I couldn't send him to his grandmother's
because I loved him so much. I love all of my children.”
Virak's mother cried out to the only person she knew could help --
God.
“I prayed every day,” she says. “Then,
one day, I got a letter from my church that said I
was going to get a scholarship for my son from CBN.
I was so happy. Now my son didn't have to go to his
grandmother's.”
CBN also helped Virak get new school clothes, a backpack, and school
supplies. But the greatest gift of all for this future teacher was seeing
a smile on his mother's face.
“When CBN gave me a scholarship, it also helped my mom. I thank
God that He used CBN to help me…. Thank you.”
