CBN.com – Manna Lu is a 29-year-old Catholic nun who lives in China. Her life is all about sacrifice. Sometimes she goes without for months so she can help little children like Meng Meng.
At age eight, he’s clever and always on the go. He wants to be a pilot when he grows up -- a big ambition for a boy who can’t hear.
“He can’t take care of himself very well,” Manna says, “but I have managed to teach him how to wash his clothes, make his bed, and greet people.”
Doctors say Meng Meng likely lost his hearing when he was abandoned as a baby. He found a home at this orphanage.
The orphanage director says, “When you ask him if he wants water, you have to pat him and act out the drinking. Then he decides what to do.”
To ensure any kind of future for this bright young boy, Meng Meng would need a hearing aid. But the $1,000 cost put it out of reach for the sisters at his orphanage.
Then, CBN heard about Meng Meng’s challenge and provided a hearing aid for him free of charge.
“I remember when Meng Meng put on his hearing aid,” the doctor says. “His first word was mother! He was so excited about the sound after living in silence for so long.”
CBN didn’t stop there. To help Meng Meng communicate better, they also paid for speech therapy classes. Manna says, “I told him if he wants to fly a plane, he needs to study hard!”
Meng Meng has taken Sister Lu’s advice and has made great progress in school. Now, he can talk and listen just like all the other kids.
“He practices speaking all the time, everywhere he goes,” Manna says. “He is at the top of his class. This semester, he scored 100 in math and 99 in language.”
His doctor says, “With a simple hearing aid, CBN brought hope to Meng Meng and gave him a bright future!”
