'PASSION' UPDATE
'Passion' Film Came
After Crisis in Gibson's Life
CBN.com (CBN
News) - Mel Gibson's upcoming film, The Passion of The Christ has
been surrounded by controversy. The movie tells the story of the last
12 hours in the life of Christ.
A few Jewish leaders fear it could spark anti-Semitism, but Gibson says
that is far from the true message of the film.
"By his wounds we are healed. That is the point of the film,"
Gibson said. "The film is not about pointing fingers, not about
the blame game."
In a lengthy interview with ABC'S Diane Sawyer before the film first
opened last year, Mel Gibson spent much of the time defending his film.
The Passion of The Christ has some opponents charging his work
could fuel a new wave of anti-Semitism.
But as a new ABC poll shows, Gibson's film would have to be very
convincing to change the beliefs of the overwhelming majority of Americans.
The poll shows that 80 percent believe the Jews are not responsible
for the death of Christ.
"For me, it goes against the tenets of my faith to be racist
in any form. To be anti-Semitic is a sin," Gibson said.
Gibson also says the graphic portrayal of the crucifixion was carefully
thought out. And its content sticks closely to the Gospel accounts.
"I wanted it to be shocking and extreme, to push the viewer
over the edge so they see the enormity of the sacrifice, to see that
someone could endure that and come back with love," Gibson said.
Gibson says his passion for the film came at a time in his life when
he was plagued with addictions, and had come to the end of himself. But
instead of taking his own life, Gibson says he turned to God for help,
and found new life in the Gospel accounts of Jesus.
