Vietnam Leader Gets Chilly U.S. Reception
CBN News
CWNews.com–---The president of Vietnam met with President Bush and members of Congress in Washington, d.c. this week.
But he received a chilly reception from u.s. lawmakers about human rights abuses in Vietnam --
specifically concerning his government's crackdown on religious freedom.
President Nguyen Minh Triet met behind closed doors with members of Congress to drum up support for strengthened trade ties with the u.s.
Instead, he got an earful of complaints. One congressman says that Triet insisted his country has "lots of human rights" and that dissidents are a security threat, although the Communist leader could not explain how.
Note: Last summer, The Voice of the Martyrs invited eight ordinary teenagers from around the United States and Australia to meet the underground church of Vietnam.
Their mission was simple-to bring Bibles and other help and learn what it is really like to be a Christian in a restricted nation.
