CBNNews.com - A group of Christians are finishing a week-long prayer vigil on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. today.

The group fasted and prayed all week, beginning Sunday afternoon. Leaders say they are humbly calling upon God in a time when our country needs it the most.

"Events over the past several days have made it clear that politics cannot solve the serious problems we are facing," Patrick Mahoney, who is leading the vigil, said. "In Washington, D.C. political leaders are only interested in pointing fingers and blame shifting. Our only hope is to passionately seek a gracious God and implore Him to bring healing to our broken land."

With the upcoming presidential election and the recent financial problems, these believers called out for God's mercy and divine direction.

"God is really our only hope," said participant Katie Mahoney.

"Now is the time to pray that the right leaders will come," Nathan Rummage said.

The non-partisan Christian Defense Coalition, which organized the vigil, also placed a 16-foot cross on the west lawn of the Capitol building.

The prayer event, called "The D.C. Awakening" began Oct. 5 and ends Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.
