CBNNews.com - Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, whose state has hosted the Republican National Convention, told convention-goers that John McCain is the man for this time.

"This time, our time, is calling out for John McCain," he said as he finished up his brief remarks. Pawlenty spoke for about 10 minutes to GOP delegates. He was at one point considered on the short list for McCain's running mate.

The Minnesota governor, who was first elected to offfice in 2002, began his remarks by asking how one can gauge a person's character.

"Barack Obama gives a good speech. But the best sermons are preached. They're lived," he said. "John McCain has walked the walk. And he has always put our country first."

Pawlenty went through a litany of McCain's achievements in Washington that he says show his reformist qualities.

"He stood up to special interests, and earmark spending," he said.

Pawlenty also said that McCain showed his true colors by standing up for an unpopular war when the President called for a troop surge - a move that has proved successful in reducing violence in some of the most troubled regions of Iraq.

The governor then explained what he calls Sam's Club Republican's, so-called "blue-collar" Reagan Democrats. He said that while McCain is tough, his compassion allows him to understand the economic hardships facing everyday Americans.

"He is a purple heart recipient with a heart of Gold," Pawlenty said.

Thursday is the last night of the convention, culminating in McCain's acceptance speech for the Republican nomination.
