CBNNews.com - WASHINGTON - Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps has made history.

He has now broken two more world records becoming the greatest Olympian of all time. And Phelps could go on to win three more gold medals before all is said and done.

Phelps Opens Olympic 
Event, Sets Record

Phelps won despite having problems seeing. For the last 100-meters, his goggles were filled with water. But Phelps proved unstoppable.

An hour later, he was back in the water with his swim team for the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Together they shattered another world record by more than four seconds, putting Phelps closer to his goal of winning eight gold medals at the Beijing Summer Games.

His 11 career medal total makes him the most successful athlete of the modern Olympic era.

Disappointment in U.S. Women's Gymnastics

But it was a disappointing day for Team USA in women's gymnastics.

China managed to pull off an upset in the team artistic performance event when they upstaged the accident-prone American team whose performance hit major stumbles and missteps.

China finished two points ahead of the Americans, giving them the gold.

U.S. Scores the Gold in Soccer

Excitement spilled over on the soccer field with the USA scoring its first goal against New Zealand less than a minute into the game.

America won four to zero and advances to the quarterfinals.

And the Redeem Team is keeping the dream alive on the basketball court, defeating Angola 97 to 76.

So far, America leads in the overall medal count, but China has the most gold.

King of Olympic Ratings

And for NBC, the Beijing Summer Olympics has proven to be ratings gold. 

It estimates some 157 million viewers have seen at least some of the games on TV or cable. That's a little more than half the population.
