VATICAN CITY - The Roman Catholic Church has four new saints, including a nun from India.
The canonization of Sister Alphonsa is seen as a morale boost to Indian Christians who have been attacked by Hindu mobs. Catholic bishops in India say at least 40 Christians have been killed.
After the ceremony in St. Peter's Square, Benedict told Indian pilgrims that Alphonsa's "patience, fortitude and perserverance in the midst of deep suffering remind us that God always provides the strength we need to overcome every trial." Alphonsa was 35 when she died in 1946.
Christians in Iraq also continue to suffer attacks on their priests, congregations and churches.
Benedict said, "I urge the perpetrators of violence to renounce these acts and join with their brothers and sisters to work together in building a civilization of love."
