Governments, Churches Support Pleasant Grove Case

SALT LAKE CITY - The U.S. government, 14 states and 10 cities are backing the city of Pleasant Grove, Utah, in its fight to bar the Summum religious group from erecting a monument in a city park.
Pleasant Grove denied Summum's attempt to donate a monument bearing the group's "Seven Aphorisms" for placement in its Pioneer Park in 2003, even though the city had previously accepted the donation of a Ten Commandments monument.
In 2007, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals said the city's decision violated Summum's free-speech rights. Pleasant Grove is asking the nation's highest court to reverse that decision.
The case is slated for arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in November.
