AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University athletic officials are pleased with the appointment last year of a pastor as a life skills assistant for the football team and plan to continue the volunteer position.
The appointment of Kevin Lykins, a Baptist pastor from Texas, as the team's life skills assistant prompted an emotional debate on campus. More than 100 faculty members signed a petition against the proposal, which many saw as violating separation of church and state.
After a year, athletic director Jamie Pollard said the appointment has been welcomed by players.
The Iowa Fellowship of Christian Athletes lists Lykins as a staff member on its Web site.
