TACOMA, Wash. - A Roman Catholic priest is retiring from his job as a prison chaplain in Washington state because he objects to new rules that let inmates claim multiple religious affiliations.
The Reverend Tom Suss says that pushed him into an ethical conflict. He says he could not accept a combination Catholic-pagan.
Since the new rules went into effect this year, nearly 40 percent of the prisoners at McNeil Island prison claim to follow multiple faiths.
Different religions have access to special items, such as incense, prayer rugs or kosher meals.
The 63-year-old Catholic priest has worked 15 years as a prison chaplain.
