Obama Touts Commitment to Israel

WASHINGTON - Hoping to reassure Jewish voters who've expressed unease about his candidacy, Democratic front-runner Barack Obama says he's committed to ensuring Israel's security.

An adviser to the militant Palestinian group Hamas recently said they hope Obama wins the presidency.

In an interview posted on The Atlantic magazine's Web site, Obama says some in the Arab world may feel that way because he spent part of his childhood in Muslim Indonesia, has the middle name Hussein and advocates presidential-level talks with foreign leaders ostracized by the Bush administration.

But he said, "Nobody should mistake that for a softer stance when it comes to terrorism or when it comes to protecting Israel's security."
