Weak Dollar Forces Seminary to Scale Back Chapel Plans

CROMWELL, Conn. - The weak dollar and the vagaries of the exchange rate have derailed plans to build a grand chapel at Connecticut's only Roman Catholic seminary.
Officials of the Holy Apostles College and Seminary were to build a $4 million chapel with a wooden dome with a brass sheen. Unveiled two years ago, plans for the chapel also boasted soaring stained glass windows and spiraling columns.
The chapel was to be built primarily in Europe by German engineers and artisans and shipped to Connecticut for assembly. But because of the falling value of the dollar and a rising euro, projected costs have ballooned to about $5 million.
The seminary's directors balked at such a sum and have replaced the German designers, scaled back the plans and are now seeking a domestic contractor.
