Evangelicals: Billy Graham Supports But Won't Sign Manifesto

WASHINGTON - "An Evangelical Manifesto" released this week in Washington lacks the signature of America's best-known evangelist, the Reverend Billy Graham.

But one of the manifesto's authors, evangelical writer Os Guinness, says that doesn't mean Graham disapproves of it. Guinness says Graham "welcomed" and "was deeply supportive" of the document declaring evangelicals' identity and mission, but has only signed one document in the past -- the 1974 Lausanne Covenant on world missions.

Billy Graham's spokesman, Larry Ross, says the 89-year-old evangelist is no longer preaching, but is in good spirits and working on a new book. In Ross's words, "The lion still has a roar" and "has no plans to retire until God retires him."
