VATICAN CITY - The Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI is "deeply saddened" by the devastation wrought by a cyclone in Myanmar.
He is appealing to the international community to quickly gather aid for the stricken Asian country.
The Vatican says the pope is praying for the tens of thousands killed by the cyclone and for those left homeless or suffering. He is also confident that the international community will respond with help for Myanmar's people.
Benedict's reaction was relayed in a telegram from the Vatican secretary of state to the archbishop who heads Myanmar's Catholic Bishops Conference.
