Christian Attorneys Counsel Caution in Polygamist Custody Cases

DALLAS - A Christian legal group says Texas should be required to prove that hundreds of children taken from a polygamist church compound were either abused or were at imminent risk of being abused.

Otherwise, the Liberty Legal Institute says the rights of other parents could be threatened.

The institute's Kelly Shackelford says critics of homeschooling, for example, could report what they deem to be an abusive environment and seek the removal of homeschooled children from their parents.

Shackeford says the issue shouldn't be what the polygamist church group believes, but whether actual abuse was occurring. He maintains that only that can justify government interference with what he says are parents' "God-given rights to raise their children" as they see fit.
