Good News Buried by Avalanche of Apathy

February 11, 2008

"The U.S. military is seriously deficient in meeting "the threat of Islamist insurgencies," That's the opening line of the top story on CNN's website on Monday night.

Good grief. Give me a break.

The CNN story cites a report by Rand Corp, a nonprofit research group commissioned to study the U.S. role in the Global War on Terror.

But dig into the story just a little and you'll find some glaring contradictions. It quotes the lead author of the report as saying "Violent extremism in the Muslim world is the gravest national security threat the United States faces,"

Ya think? How much does this guy get paid for doling out such incredible wisdom? He should forego the ridiculously obvious and stick to the merely obvious, such as, further down the story, the report concludes that:

"establishing "representative, competent and honest" local government is the way to go.

Really? You mean like our troops have been doing for the last five years in Iraq? Or was there a magic button the Pentagon somehow missed labeled: "CREATE COMPETENT REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT OVERNIGHT?"

Meanwhile, In the Anbar city of Hit, the Marines are preparing to turn the city over to a [gasp!] functioning Iraqi government. Which they helped build. From scratch. While being shot at. It's the largest demilitarization to date in Anbar province. Ask yourself this: Why isn't that story on CNN? It's almost like they don't care.

But the Marines keep creating the good news, because they aren't in it for the press. Another day in the life of the American Serviceman. Proving yet again that their toughest battle isn't in Iraq, it's in Washington.

If CNN won't give you balanced reporting on the war, we will. Stay tuned.
