I'm Tired of the Campaign too, but...
December 6, 2007
I will be glad when the presidential election is over. The candidates have been going at it for more than a year and we still have eleven months to go! Still, these campaigns serve two valuable purposes.
The first one is obvious: they give us, the voters, an opportunity to hear what the candidates believe about important issues. The second purpose, however, isn't quite as obvious, but just as important: the rigors of campaigning provide a valuable training ground for holding the office.
That was driven home to me as I observed Mitt Romney make his so-called "Faith Speech" in Texas. The pressure on the former Massachusetts governor, who is trying to become the first Mormon elected president, was immense.
Some political pundits believed Romney was making a big mistake by making the speech. While I am not endorsing any candidate, I believe he handled the pressure well and delivered a fine speech.
All the cable networks were there live and it was streamed live on many news websites including CBNNews.com. As all the national and local news cameras were trained on an empty podium in the minutes leading up to the speech, the talking heads were speculating about what Romney would say.
It had the feel of an important presidential address. And that's the point. Have you ever wondered what it must be like to be the President of the United States and address the American people? While I've done my share of public speaking over the years, I've got to tell you, I wouldn't be nervous, I'd be scared to death!
When it comes time for our next commander-in-chief to step behind a podium with the presidential seal affixed, we want him or her to be able to say privately, "No problem, I've been here before, on the campaign trail."
